Cordless Honeycomb Shades

The cutting edge of energy savings blind design is the cordless honeycomb blind. These blinds combine the insulating technology of air pockets with the ease and safety of cordless design.

The cordless design is actually easier to use. All blinds may soon be required to be cordless, or at least have some kind of child resistant lowering device, because the loops on the corded versions have been deadly to infants. Furniture giant IKEA had to recall millions of blinds sold over a 10+ year period recently to address the problem. Modern technology makes cordless cellular blinds in several ways: the most common uses a device similar to roller blinds where pulling on the bottom of the blind activates a spring at the top that pulls the blinds up.

Cellular shades use an interlocking design of slats that creates insulating air pockets when lowered. The air works as another buffer layer between the outside and inside of your home. Because windows are the areas of the home where most heat transfers, any extra insulation can dramatically effect the interior. You will notice that you home is more comfortable and energy bills should be lower.

For real energy savings, consider multiple cell designs. Some honeycomb blinds have as many as 3 air cell pockets deep of protection. Shades like this should be well installed and fit snugly into the window frame to maximize their economy. Double and triple cellular blinds also double as blackout shades because all the layers effectively block out the sun, leaving your rooms pitch black with the lights out and shades lowered. Shift workers and lazy teenagers prefer this because it allows them to sleep during the day without the sun interfering.

Of course you can also go with a thinner, light filtering design if you want a little insulation combined with natural light. Cellular shades used to be a specialty blind, but as consumers are realizing the benefits of these window coverings, they are coming in more styles and colors. Gone are the days of off-white only; now you can buy your honeycomb shades in different styles and colors.
